A highly sought after, set of four, vintage model 401 butterfly chairs. These chairs are in amazingly good condition for their age, whoever owned them has obviously taken very good care of them!
*Please Note - This listing is for the chairs only - At the time of listing we also have the matching Plank table that was purchased from the same original owner. Please see photographs.
– Excellent original condition
Designed in 1958 the 401 Butterfly chair was known as the ‘Preformed Chair’ at the time as it was made from moulded plywood rather than the solid wood Ercol are renowned for. This chair stands out as it was a landmark in the development of furniture making.
Steam bent beech bars connect the seat pad and the seat back both of which are curved, moulded plywood which have been veneered in the elm associated with Ercol. The underframe is consistent with the rest of the Windsor range and is made from beech.
Ercol made this chair between 1958 and 1963.
As with all Ercol furniture the build quality and materials used are second to none.
The chairs are in excellent original condition, we have given them nothing but a simple clean and polish. They are all structurally sound with no give to the backs. There may be some minor polished in marks as to be expected for their age. Please take a look at the photographs for more detail.
Dimensions:
Width: 43cm
Depth: 45cm
Height: 75cm
Height to seat: 43cm
A scarcely seen set of chairs that would bring a touch of classic Mid Century style to any interior space.
